At the MOMA

We went to the MOMA late on Friday afternoon to be with the crowd and see the Pollocks and Mondrians we had been talking about. Our favorite restaurant was closed for renovations so we tried a Chinese place where Judy had lobster in black bean sauce, that was memorable. On the way home we passed the hole in the wall candy shop, decked out for Valentines Day.

San Miguel Sunday

Walked to the Chorro and up to the cultural center above it where the art fair was over, saw kids rehearsing for a dance number. Then down for lunch at El Correo again. We had beer with our lunch and then sat in the Jardin watching the world go by. On the way home we stopped at the Bellas Artes, and to the used bookstore [where they had sold the book I had seen on our last visit] and Judy found four large parrots [no pictures] and wall worthy of Loos' early days.

San Miguel Saturday

Cheryl went Zumba [Latin dance and aerobics] dancing in the morning while we sat around and watched the gardener work. When she came home we all went to a large indoor market, then to a little square with a church and then to the Instituto, where there was an art fair. Ed bought a photo. Everywhere we went we saw bugs, Ed kept falling behind because he couldn't stop taking picutures of them. We had pizza at a local Italian restaurant. We went to a chamber concert at a nearby church. Full house and a world premier of a work by Samuel Zyman, who came all the way from his home at 89th and Broadway for the event. Then we took a cab back to the Fabrica la Aurora where there was a champagne and chocolate party with salsa music. Judy and Ed got lost but found each other.

San Miguel Friday

Walked uphill to Stirling Dickinson's orchid collection in the old tannery. There weren't many flowers in bloom, but we had a wonderful tour by the gardener and his very shy little boy. lunch at a restaurant on a second floor patio. Ed had mole soup with lots of things thrown in. Then back to the park to look at flowers again, stopping along the way to hear a sales pitch on a new condo-hotel development.

In San Miguel Thursday

In the morning we walked to the Bellas Artes where we saw the perspectival room Judy remembered from our last trip. We tried again to find shoes for Susanna, but couldn't match the right color and size. In the afternoon we ate at El Buen Cafe where I had an enchilada with mole sauce and Judy had a guacamole that were memorable. Rick and Cheryl signed up for cooking lessons with the owner of the restaurant. From there we went to the Fabrica la Aurora, where there were many galleries of new works. The building was a textile factory that was open from 1902 to 1991. Many of the turbines and other machines were still visible. It seemed to us that it was at the end of the canyon river we had seen yesterday. Ed started taking pictures of bugs in Mexico

San Miguel Wednesday

In the morning Judy and I discovered a little coffee shop and restaurant. In the afternoon we went to the Instituto, where we had lunch. It looked like an old convent that had been converted into a multi-use community center. From there we went to the botanic garden, where we saw a great variety of cacti and some new birds and a dramatic gorge. Ed got lost. Later we had dinner at a restaurant in Gringolandia called Hecho en Mexico, where Judy and Cheryl had chicken soup.

San Miguel Tuesday

Went to the library again and Rick and Cheryl joined. We ate in the courtyard. I had my second enchilada [with red sauce]. We went to the Artisan's market looking for crocs. Unable to find them there we went on to the teeming Tuesday Market outside of town where we finally achieved our goal. Rick cooked dinner.

San Miguel Monday

We arrived at Rick and Cheryl's place after an hour drive from Queirtero. In the morning we enjoyed sitting on the roof-top garden looking out over the city and enjoying the local birds, while Rick and Cheryl went to their Spanish class. We walked across the street and looked at a house that was for sale and inspired fantasies about building a house. When they returned we all walked to the Jardin and stopped for lunch at a little restaurant across from the old post office. I had my first enchillada [with red sauce]. The library was closed. The perspective room at the Bellas Artes was also closed. Went to Parque Juarez to see the flower fair celebrating Candalaria, which is the Mexican Ground Hog Day. Supper at local restaurant at Mariscolandia.
